I enjoy the exchange of ideas and the opinions on both religious and mundane topics. Oh and two of the best friends I have ever found are on the forum and it is a nice way to stay in touch with them.

Having joined recently - I have found that the debates and information here is really insightful. I enjoy many of the discussions and topics. Since visiting here I have found I am thinking about my own beliefs more and how similar they are to other people's beliefs. This group is just twisted enough to understand my sense of humor as well which is a bonus.

I enjoy hearing all the different perspectives on such a wide range of issues. I find everyone here to be intelligent and friendly, I also like the free gas and cigarettes. :smoke:

So, from my exalted throne on Mount Adminpus, I gaze down upon you mortals, and I'm pleased, but puzzled. (end joking)

I'm curious. Many of you know that I've been admin here for almost 5 years. In that time we've gone from ~600 members to almost 7000.

Obviously, many of our members don't return, or have found other interests, or whatever. But, we do have a suprisingly large contingent, at least to me, of people who have made this their "home" forum of choice.

Why is that? What keeps you coming back? Why ya'll like it here?

Well, speaking for myself, I feel that as an ordained minister, I should keep in touch with my fellow ministers and the church that ordained me.

What better way to do that than to visit this forum ?

1. we talk about really important stuff!

2. we talk about things i care about but would forget to think about if i wasn't reminded. so, it gets me thinking about things i should think about.

3. there's a high signal-to-noise ratio -- very little trolling and lots of well-intended writing.

4. the content is healthy to intake, much better than the news or TV!

5. it's really easy to check the View New Posts page and digest everything since my last visit. i do this every morning.

6. if i feel like only reading serious stuff, it's already categorized for me. i guess this is normal for most forums though...

7. forum members around here care about the community, the rules, and the quality of what's discussed. those that don't care don't stick around. it helps that this place is not heavily advertised or anything. it's like a little hole-in-the-wall bar that you stumble across and always come back to.

First off the ulc offers ordination, which when I heard about it I felt it was a novelty. The idea of hundreds of people ordained; presumably without any seminary, or Bible school training really tickled me. I personally have been through a few courses provided by churches in the past and found them to be one-sided and self-serving.

I have nothing against a classically trained clerics, but what we have cannot be taught in seminary, and it's worth protecting.

The next thing was to find mature, teachable people :biggrinthumb: trying to brighten up the corner where they are. These are people who can take a joke.

Well I think my reasons have changed over the years. At first I wanted a place to chat with other spiritual persons, and this forum seemed to be the most open minded out of the ones I visited then. I was also newly ordained back then and could use the information that was here.

Then I became chat mod, and I made a few friends. Basically I was taken into the fold and it was not only a learning/sharing place, but also a friendly place.

Then I took a break for awhile. I hit a point where school wasn't going too well, I needed more time and felt I should step down as mod since I didnt have the time nor the mentality to help moderate.

I stayed away for awhile, but eventually that first reason has drawn me back. Its changed somewhat. Many friends have gone their separate ways, but there are still a few die hard friends. And I don't post as much either. Instead I read for 5 or 10 minutes and I might check in to see whats new every few hours. But otherwise I'm not as involved. I still keep in touch though and enjoy reading.
