  1. yup http://youtu.be/Vj0Yz6q3zEk this is for my frieda
  2. http://youtu.be/3iN5fUyWFI8 the sweet sentiment belies the fickle hand of fate, and hate. what appears an idyllic moment, what is an idyllic moment, precedes a parents worst nightmare. baby girl goes missing, and the white man refuses to allow the black tracker to help. the little girl dies for her fathers ignorance and need. and the planet screams it's outrage. (it's a musical, it's supposed to be dramatic !) one night the moon, from our friends in austraila
  3. unfortunately, it does. (I only heard my father's voice in his illness in this song ) but the speaker is hopeful, and at peace with his world, at least that's how I hear it
  4. death is nipping at our door. not banging yet but it still sucks... so for me and mine, and you and yours, let it be easy when they go, yes? this always made me feel better. http://youtu.be/CPp5Z0j1dwY I think my dad may have written part of it
  5. it looks lovely reverend, and will no doubt become lovlier still. best of luck to you in your new endeavor
  6. what a lovely shot songster (maybe you could help me figure out that pesky feature. I went to change my photo and it won't let me download anything, says they are all too large and I can't access the old photo, but it lets me put photos in otherwise. also, I can't figure out how to import avatars and am too embarrassed to keep posting in technical assistance)
  7. you could draw us a picture songster! when I was about ten, I listened while my parents and a few of my uncles discussed extraterrestrials, the universe and the like. my uncle mike said, "the universe is so vast, who am I to say emphatically that something does or does not exist". he was a wise man. so it certainly fits into the realm of possibilities in my belief structure
  8. congratulations and best of luck to you in your new endeavor! keep us poted
  9. perhaps this explains my rather devout mother-in- law the feminist's love of her faith that is a message that even little me could have gotten, that the Torah has seventy faces, and a myriad valid interpretations.
  10. so far, it seems a far nicer story as you tell it. you have often mentioned that this verse or that does not say what another might think it does. is it translation that is at issue? interpretation? it seems to be. is it as simple as a jewish view versus a christian view? do reform interpret the same as orthodox? as lubuvitchers? just trying to clarify as I consider the conversation but from what I have read of the bible, and from what I can recall, there seems a crystal clear implication that a woman is not equal to a man, and yes, unclean. at the very least, it is interpreted as such. and many point to the bible and these words to subjugate women. (I have never read the torah, I don't read hebrew. so I have no way of experiencing it in the same way)
  11. what amazing news! so very happy for you both very loud clapping and continued blessings and light
  12. I often see it that way too, crzy including the way some see god. I can think of more than a few people here who "see god" in a very cool way, and emulate those things positive and enlightened - the antithesis of what you describe. but SO many who profess to be believers (in whatever) use their religion to wage wars, large and small pffft, I don't have much respect for them
  13. while I have never considered myself a christian or a roman catholic, I did attend religious schools at my parents insistence. I found that most of the more enlightened folks welcomed all beliefs, I could discuss my questions and issues with church law and get rational answers as to why they believe as they do and also that those who shouted loudest against others were sorely lacking in other aspects of "following christ" as well. hard to say if either is "false" - it's not my truth but that's okay. I figure their belief system resonates with them in the same way that mine does with me I think they are aspects of a similar path often times and since I don't have a branch of religion I say yes! I don't get this, seems the antithesis of the message of jesus (not being a scholar of the bible, I may defer to those who are) sadly, your story is a common one. still I'm sad for your teenage self - and wish I could smack the smile of your sunday school teacher's face
  14. welcome father john g yours is a particularly interesting path! I have tons of questions for you, being the product of private catholic schools and all, haha seriously though, while catholic education was wasted on me in many ways, I learned much from many wise sisters and priests there. and into adulthood, jesuits and sisters of st joseph among my friends .. it was the church, its history and hierarchy which offended me not the individuals called to serve. I look forward to hearing more (and welcome, if I haven't done so already)
  15. happy new year everyone, let's hope its a good one
  16. unfortunately, its an ebook . I share your love of the look and feel of a "real book", my shelves are full of old favorites, though many that I loved have been lent or lost .. with our move last year, I had to trade my love of text with the cost of transporting them cross country. luckily, there are amazing used book stores here in the east bay, little independents that sell used books, good as new .. still on my nightstand is evelyn waugh's brideshead revisited. I read the book you are reading a few years ago, and found it incredibly interesting to consider the how/why of "what made it into the book". I think I came away with it feeling like if these books had featured more prominently, the world may be a better place .. probably just wishful thinking. It has always been the motivations of "the church" that I found suspect, not the words or the people who follow those words with their heart.
  17. I just bought the first in ken follett's series, finally, I had so much to plow through this winter that I'm just getting to it going into the mines (with the spirit of my great grandfather) I'll keep you posted
