What Would You Do/not Do For A Million Dollars?

A better question might be; "What would you do for money?"

Assume you are destitute, not a dime to your name, no where to sleep, and haven't eaten in 4 days.

What would you do for a little money under those circumstances? I have a feeling that most of us would

put our high sounding morals on a shelf and cross some boundaries that we wouldn't otherwise consider.

People do what they have to do to survive. Wouldn't most of us cheat, steal, break laws, and lower our

moral standards in order to sustain ourselves and our families? If it came down to 'Steal a loaf of bread

or die', what wouldn't you do for money?

I have to agree. Over the years, I have had some jobs I hated. It was about the money. It still is -- at least part of the time.

So, the bottom line is, that if our situation was dire enough, everyone of us would cheat, steal, and break every rule in the book for a buck. What a fine bunch of ministers we are :) When push comes to shove, every individual puts themselves and their own family first, and given the correct circumstances, every individual would harm others for a little money, Jesus excluded. I guess that's what separates the Shepherd from the flock. When it comes to survival, there's really not much difference between humans and animals. JMO

Not for a little money but for survival. I the Abrahamic God created us he also instilled the will to live and the drive to survive. Protecting and providing for the survival of your family is conducive to passing on your DNA. This fine bunch of ministers are biological animals as well.

No. People can be self-less. The example that comes to mind -- firefighters rushing into a burning building, looking for people to rescue. Such work is not about the money. I think the question needs to be expanded.

What would you be willing to die for?

Under stressful conditions, people often surprise.

Well since you seem to want to speak for me, I shall speak for myself.

You have one mighty hell of a nerve saying what any of us would do.

Have I been poor? You're damned right I have. I have eaten food out of dumpsters, washed clothes in a stream, shaved in public restrooms, and slept outdoors. I did it for four months, and still reported to job interviews three or more times a week, until I finally found enough work to pay my past debts and put a roof back over my head, so don't you DARE presume to say for one second that I would cheat anyone or steal.

You think you know all the answers, but don't you EVER paint me with your brush.

And before you have the audacity to say my lack of work is a result of choices I made, think twice. I survived two strokes and had to pay for the medical expenses myself when my employer fired me rather than keep me on and pay for my benefits. But somehow, you would probably blame me for not being able to afford to leave the state (as if the job prospects are better elsewhere), and make it my fault that I live in an at will state where it is legal for an employer to release an employee at will.

Bottom line, Dan, sometimes you shoot off your mouth without thinking who you might be hurting. Sometimes I wish you would think more carefully before you post.

Lighten-up, my comments were not specifically directed towards you. I said nothing about you being out of work or having to struggle.. Paid your own medical bills? Good for you. I'm glad you paid your own bills and found a job after being poor for 4 months, but I said absolutely nothing about you or anyone else's lack of work ethic being the result of choices they made. My whole opinion was that if a person was in a position where they would die or they could steal a loaf of bread and survive, they would most likely resort to theft and live. Can you honestly say that if you had a little 4 year old girl, that you would watch her starve to death rather than steal her a little food? I was not attacking anyone's character or their ethics, I was simply making a general comment that most people would break laws under certain circumstances. The fact that you never broke any laws during hard times is honorable, sorry if I unintentionally hurt your pride. Let me rephrase my assumption; "When push comes to shove, every individual puts themselves and their own family first, and given the correct circumstances, every individual would harm others for a little money, Jesus and Brother Devon excluded". :)

In addition to the erroneous assumptions BrDevon noted, you also seem to be equating money to survival. There are people all around the world even today who manage to get themselves and their families through with little to no money. In some cases the situation is not ideal, but starving to death they are not. In my own experiences, it seems to be those who see money as a panacea to the ills of society that suffer most when times get tight. So the question then becomes, why do you worship money to the degree you feel there is only chaos without it?

BrDevon, I am unsure what living situation you are in now, I am hoping it is much better. I urge you to give a look into Plant a Row For the Hungry, if you do any backyard gardening. For that matter, I urge that of all here.

Yes, I'm aware that people all over the world struggle without breaking laws. My imaginary scenario was simply that given the choice of stealing a little food or dying, most people would resort to theft. If people are getting through hard times without starving to death, that's a whole other scenario, and I wasn't referring to them. In the case of theft or death, it becomes a matter of choosing the lesser of two evils. I still believe that people under those harsh circumstances would do what's necessary to keep their families alive, and that's not a bad thing, I'd do it myself. So its not a matter of worshipping money, it was a question of what you would be willing to do without money in an extreme life or death situation.

Many here were listing what they would not be willing to do for a million dollars. My whole point was that circumstances usually dictate what a person would do, and I used an extreme example to demonstrate what I meant. I never dreamed that others would find the idea of stealing a loaf of bread to save a child to be offensive. The responses had nothing to do with the reality of what I unsuccessfully tried to present... I regret bringing it up. My comment "What a fine bunch of ministers we are" :) was a joke, thus the smiley face. Simply stated; If you could only save a child by stealing, but refused to steal and allowed the child to die, would you feel proud of yourself? Or would you have an easier time living with yourself knowing that you broke a rule to save a life? If people would choose the former, then I guess I was wrong about human nature.

Of would one let a four year old child die by refusing to take advantage of medicare.

I suspect that some members here indeed would feel proud.

So, according to your own logic, under the right circumstances:

You, Dan, would molest a child.

You, Dan, would torture an innocent.

You, Dan, would rape a man or a woman.

You, Dan, would commit murder.

You, Dan, sound like a sociopath.

And if that is what you got from reading this topic and ALL of Dan56's posts, then you, Elphaba, are missing the point entirely. I, being perhaps a lesser person than Dan56, would quite happily kill who ever I had to in order to protect my family but that is NOT what Dan56 suggested at all.

Yes, I believe the point I was making went over your head. If I sound like a sociopath, its only because you've taken everything out of context to make me sound that way? Get your mind out of the gutter, I mentioned none of those things you listed. What exactly does molestation, torture, or rape have to do with survival? Or money? Re-read my post to get a better grasp of the content. I gave specific examples of what I was referring to. I won't rehash it, but my simple point was that if you had the choice of stealing a loaf of bread or starving to death, most people would resort to theft to survive. I did say under 'certain circumstances', which did not include molesting children... How would that feed anyone anyway? Your logic is flawed, not mine. I noticed that those of you who disagree with me could not and will not answer my simple question, that's because your answer would only provide affirmation that what I'm saying is true.

By the way, you wrote; "I would eat domesticated animal flesh, such as cat or dog.....

I would eat human flesh.....I would have sexual relations"

So you would eat your dog, resort to cannibalism, and prostitute yourself out for a buck... And you

think I'm a sociopath?

How is that sociopathy? There is strong historic precedent for eating "pets" some dog breeds were even developed for that purpose. Eating the corpse of someone who has died does them no harm. If I were to die and my friends could be sustained through eating my flesh, let them have at it. To be honest, if I could find a legal means of letting my closest friends consume my heart when I had passed, I'd request it. What better send off for someone you love? And there is nothing inherently immoral with prostitution. I'd argue the profession of prostitute is much more moral than that of the priest.

Dog is tasty from what I hear, human tastes like pig (or is at least reported so) and has many documented cases of people eating it for pleasure, religious rites and out of survival, an finally there are some porn stars make heaps of money and own small empires (Jenna jamison for example).
