I assumed as much... I was more talking to damnthing... 

 

Logic would dictate it would be something of a "cultural" talk. As you have said also: if they were here to take our resources they wouldn't need to be talking...

 

So I'd assume an answer likt: Hi there, I'm here to get to know more about you...

In pseudo code the algorithm would look something like this:

 

IF they could even come here,

AND even remotely relate to us,

AND are not interested in simply taking our resources,

THEN they would actually be here to get to know us...

ELSE we simply can not know

OR we are f#@&ed...

 

Something like that...?

There are other options.  Perhaps silly, but we are speculating.

• Empire Building.  Perhaps in the manner of Great Britain or Rome.  Empire for it's own sake.  Just because they have high tech, does not imply social maturity.  I should clarify.  That does not mean that they want us as citizens.  When Great Britain took over India, that included the elephants.  The elephants were never citizens.  
• Missionaries.  Come to save our souls.  They can have high tech and still be crazy.
• Academics.  Doctoral students are always looking for strange things, to do a research study.
• Musicologists, Linguists, Social Scientists, etc.  You never know what will excite a professional.
• Tourism.  The more primitive and disgusting, the better.
• Chefs.  "TO  SERVE  MAN"
• Conservationists.  They might want to save the whales -- from us.

We're basically fooked if they're here: for empire building, as missionaries, chefs and/or conservationists (Star Trek IV?)...

Missionary can mean very different things.  They could have a mental discipline or philosophy that is actually useful.  Think of the Buddhist monks teaching meditation.

 

They could also be here to help.  As in -- "Children should not be playing with matches.  I'm here to collect your nuclear weapons, before you hurt yourselves."

 

Of course -- "I'm here for some great music.  Do you play?"
