  1. oh god no, I know this is all in good fun , I was just playing along he's a setter songster, no worries brdevon, yes, yes, yes, spay, neuter, adopt, four leggeds don't belong on the street alone..we have an extra cat if you want one
  2. have we or have we not determined that the rat in the photo is bp corey's pet? I'd be quite put out if everyone was dog bashing ...
  3. another example of why you are one who can make lemonade out of the lemons life hands us - instead of rubbing them into paper cuts or sqirting them in your eye.... everyone, pet "owners", neighbors and management just need to THINK a little bit about the consequences of their actions I am so happy for your family that your little ones are feeling better and have ultimately come through this (emotional and financial) nightmare relatively unscathed! and thank you for this cautionary tale !
  4. okay that would COMPLETELY send me screaming...I thought this was bp corey's pet rat...and well beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and rats are usually just doing rat things, being the best rats they can be, who am I to judge? I remember hearing that there were rats in nyc as big as cats, didn't believe it til I met one at an outdoor cafe in little italy..
  5. I DO think they're cute; a teaching assistant of mine had one as a pet, he was really quite lovely...(though I was a little ...freaked)
  6. sending you blessings and light scotty and a speedy and complete recovery to you asap
  7. wishing you light and strength my friend I wish I had answers to the "whoa, so much?" but it reminds me an awful lot of the boyfriend dumped me, mother died, dog died, plane crash year - some suggested reading the book of job but I was hyper-focused on the myth of sisyphus I don't have to tell you that that time was filled with amazing things too, as your new year will be but at this time of deep sadness, I wish you good things henceforth!
  8. I apologize for the profanity if it offends; I thought I had posted the censored version...
  9. hey, thank you for that, although you've just made a case for the opposition a very good one though; real life, you did it, the more I think about it, the more okay I could be with it. my better half is a chef, who works for a catering company, whose sixteen foot truck he packs and drives with confidence every day, he feels like if he can keep the asparagus and filet safe, and suitable for presentation, he can do the same for the cats.. he's also made the drive cross country a few times too, and is a cheerful and dedicated driver/traveling companion the thought of having the dog fly in cargo is worse than anything I could imagine...he's a poor soul, my dog I am concerned about temps, we're traveling end of january, taking the southern route - but that doesn't mean it won't be COLD in places, if I wrap the crates on three sides and provide good bedding?
  10. and songster, my friend, sometimes I don't get the "young folks" either! since I've hit the half century mark...
  11. ha! you've got that right and we have options, very lucky... while I want to do what I need to do in terms of economics, I must consider their needs and comfort first - they didn't ask to sign on with my clown posse (!) worst case scenario is that I would have my daughter fly home and take two..don't know if I want to do that to either the cats or my daughter, but she's a seasoned traveler and knows how to enjoy the journey despite the yowling cats in the carriers beside her... the cats are three; eleven, almost eight and six - they are all okay in transport, to the vet, the groomer, weekends in the mountains...I'd say they travel well but sedating them slightly would probably be in everyone's best interest ideally, we would rent a sixteen foot van, which would hold most of our worldly possesions, and tow the bug. the dog would have a spot on the bench seat between us (he can be a nervous nellie/a velcro dog) I guess what I'm really taking a poll on is would it ever be okay to put the cats, secured in carriers in the back of a truck IF we planned on stopping four to six times a day to turn out the dog and check on them and planned on spending the night in hotels along the way (pet friendly hotels, I've got that down at least!) I almost feel like the best/safest way for us to go is all together....
  12. and now we welcome the new year, full of things that have never been -ranier marie rilke let it be a wonderful one! good things and light to the good people here...
  13. I think this is beautifully done http://youtu.be/oLSOzcEQjiE
  14. We've recently decided to trade coasts for a few years and we're puzzling over how to transport three cats and a dog cross country. I'd really appreciate suggestions, advice and/or cautionary tales. Originally, I thought moving vans had seating for more than two people (!), I was just going to stack/bungee the kitties in travel crates and the dog would be on the other side...not an option evidently. We could ship the car and household and fly but that would be so expensive it would almost be stupid - and dreadful for the dog, at seventy five pounds, he's cargo or we could drive the car, but it's a volkswagen beetle...crowded and smelly... My better half thinks we should bungee them (in their crates) in the back of the van but I don't think I could bring myself to do that. He says its no different than when rescues transport animals in large trucks... help!
  15. well like everything in life, sometimes we just have to deal with what we've got, mares do too my experience with horses is relatively limited, but I rode regularly as a child and young adult; with all of the similarities I saw, there were always those unique things that made rebel rebel and gordie gordie...how is everyone else fairing? with time and attention, she'll come around to her "new normal"
  16. what they said! I don't think she's spoiled, her world has changed and she's making her adjustments; did you say she does or does not have access to the ten acres?
  17. so sorry you guys had to go through all that but good to know everyone is well and happy! and good lord, the management could give a heads up, or reminders when they are using toxic chemicals there's always something with these guys, isn't it? twenty years ago, I had a lovely little black persian cat named sam. he loved to sit with me in my studio when I painted...a friend had given me a bag of old oil paints which seemed perfect so I filled my palette, covering it with plastic when I wasn't painting - it took me a day or so of scratching my head, like it didn't look the way I had left it, to realize that sam had been licking the painting AND the palette - he suffered lead poisoning and brain damage, poor little guy but went on to live a good life. I think - I was devastated for my role in that...I wish I had known sounds like a lovely cat patio you've built for them to enjoy the outdoors safely!
  18. sending blessings and light to you and your friend nick, bluecat I have friends like that, as you say, they are no less dear
  19. oh, I'm sorry to hear that he and his family are struggling, and wish them the best but appreciate the need to keep the forum free of solicitation
