Agnostic Theist
Jonathan H. B. Lobl replied to Jonathan H. B. Lobl's topic in Freethought, Secularism, No Religion
The important thing about being Agnostic, or Apatheist, is not getting caught up in silly arguments. Arguments about First Cause, Unmoved Mover, evolution, cosmology, etc. Believers love to argue this stuff with Atheists. Agnostics end it with -- I don't know. Apatheists end it with -- I don't care. Atheists are frequently willing to argue. This is strictly my unscientific observation. The important distinctions are behavioral rather than philosophic. -

Agnostic Theist
Jonathan H. B. Lobl replied to Jonathan H. B. Lobl's topic in Freethought, Secularism, No Religion
For what little it's worth, I was ordained as a minister of the Apathetic Agnostic Church. The Universal Church Triumphant of the Apathetic Agnostic. The church motto was -- "We don't know and we don't care." The church died. The founder got tired of running it. The church was never incorporated. It was too much trouble. Apathetic Agnostic is enough. Again, the motto. "We don't know and we don't care." Words of wisdom to live by. To paraphrase -- Of course there could be a god or gods -- but so what? It doesn't matter. -

Oh, Dan. When did I ever tell you what to believe -- or disbelieve? You want to believe? Then believe -- and much joy may it bring you. If you want me to believe, then I need evidence. Objective, verifiable, evidence. I am not at war with you. Spiritual or otherwise. The Earth is so small. We have to find a way to live with each other in peace, and share this tiny planet. For the rest, we can paraphrase Scripture. If God is behind Christianity, it will stand. If God is not behind Christianity, it will pass. I have decided that it's not my problem. Is it your problem? That is not for me to say. It is the joy of Apathetic Agnosticism. I don't know and I don't care. Or we can paraphrase from the Lilies of the Field. I know not, neither do I care. -

Hello Dan. This is not unique to Christianity. In general, religions thrive on persecution. Two thousand years ago, Rome made that mistake with Christianity. Look how that turned out. I rather expect that without antisemitism, Judaism might have passed, long ago. It continues to this day. In modern China, the Falun Gong religion is being viciously persecuted. The result? Falun Gong is spreading around the world like wild fire. It's true. People who don't understand history, are doomed to repeat it. Over time, you have frequently suggested that my non-belief is an opposite version of your belief. You have never understood me. I have come to understand this great truth. Opposing religion just feeds the beast. It is better not to play -- and let it starve. Since religious persecution -- or just being mean -- is clearly counter productive -- that it does no good -- there is no point. It is useless. -

Atheist vs. Agnostic
Jonathan H. B. Lobl replied to Jonathan H. B. Lobl's topic in Freethought, Secularism, No Religion
Just so. I expect that Apatheism is more destructive to Christianity, than is Atheism. Also worse for Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism, etc. etc. We don't have to fight religion. It can die from lack of support. It is enough to not feed it. -

What can I say? Brain washing indoctrination runs deep. Further, being mean to them does no good. I'm not even saying that we should avoid being mean because it's cruel. Being mean is useless. They are stuck. In time, they will become unstuck. We will have to wait until they are ready.
