  1. It's from the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. A series of books by Douglas Adams. There were five books in the trilogy. (Think about that.) Much of the books was taken up by the question of Life, the Universe and Everything. The answer turned out to be 42. It then developed that for 42 to make any sense, it was necessary to understand the question. (42? Life, the Universe and everything is 42? **?) That, alas, was -- What is 8 times 6? Which is not 42. Which demonstrates the flaw in reality. Among other things, this is poking fun at philosophy and theology. It is an exercise in absurdity -- not correct math. You may have seen the Bible, referenced as The Goatherder's Guide to the Galaxy. This is what that joke is base on.
  2. If you go to the Monotheist section of this board, you will encounter some Christian voices. Have a caution. There are thousands of different varieties of Christian. Nobody speaks for all of them.

  4. Just so. The Christian Sheeple. Psalm 23 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness For His name’s sake. ... In Context | Full Chapter | Other Translations Do you know about real shepherds? They kill their sheep, eat their flesh and wear their skins. This, after a lifetime of fleecing. If the sheep knew more about shepherds, they would take their chances with wolves. They would grow their horns back, like the ancient rams, and defend themselves.
  5. Not really. These are the most basic distinctions, to me, as I understand them. If you ask Christians, or Buddhists, what they think are the most important distinctions, you will get other answers. Remember. Buddhism and Christianity come in many flavors. There is much diversity of opinion.
  6. Then we can continue. The Buddha began with certain basic questions. Why do we suffer? What is the nature of suffering? For now, we can set aside the answers to these questions. By contrast, the Christ is about the Path to God. A very different goal. I should add that I am neither Buddhist nor Christian. These are only the most basic of distinctions.
  7. At the risk of being simplistic, it is the focus. The Buddha was a man, who discovered the Path to enlightenment. It is not the Buddha which is important. It is the Path which is important. By contrast, in Christianity, the Christ is the Path. John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. 8. Alas, what changes is the correct way to ask the ultimate question. What is 8 times 6? The reason that nothing ever seems to make sense -- Is that in truth, the Universe is deeply flawed -- and nothing does make sense. It works for me.
  9. It makes more sense than a lot of other things. Where else can you get the answer to -- Life the Universe and Everything? 42
  10. When I was young, the Bible ruined Judaism for me. I went on from there to read the New Testament. That ruined Christianity for me. I've done some reading in the Koran. It's no improvement.
