  1. I am reading The Watchmen, a graphic novel from the 80s...
  2. Walkabout was an excellent film!
  3. I would have mentioned them, but the ending to the trilogy (the 5th book) sucked...
  4. Darn, I thought this thread was about a Mel Brooks take on Apocolypse Now......
  5. I think she's laughing at more of the things he says than his eventual demise a bear dinner...
  6. I assume we are speaking of the live action version of The Tick. The animated series was incredible!! Third Rock was excellent as well. As for Lithgow... "Laugh-a while you can-a, monkey boy".......
  7. My very favorite Showtime production was Queer As Folk.... So, I think I'm prepared for the sex scene. It sounds like a decent flick.
  8. I would say that almost everyone thinks that homosexual activiy is immoral and against God's will. Most are getting scared to talk out about it, today since everyone wants to pretend to be politically correct. but when given the chance to vote on gay issues, it has been obvious that at least in America it is not an accepted conduct. That sounds a lot like what people said about African Americans in the mid 60s....
  9. Why would I ever be offended by what other people do in their own bedroom? I've never understood that. I do understand that many people like to use the Bible as a tool to discriminate aginst others. That goes for far more than just homosexuals. Other than those who misinterpret scripture, I know of no one who feel homosexuality is immoral.
  10. The following has nothing to do with either of those movies. However, it is an example of how people notice different things about movies depending on who is also watching them. I used to work with a guy who was in corporate management of a call center. The upper management in his center was detached and out of touch. A movie came along which my friend felt provided a wonderful life lesson for all managers. He put together a viewing of the movie, in the conference room, on company time, for the entire management staff. The movie was Office Space. As he described it, he realized about ten minutes into the viewing what a completely stupid thing he had done. Things he disregarded about the movie while viewing it with friends were definitly not things he, or the other managers, disregarded while viewing it in a corporate setting. He eventually had to write several formal letters of apology.....
  11. She's gone. She "unregistered" long ago. She basically admitted that she was trying to use the ULC as a ploy to get out of having to pay union dues. She didn't get the amount of support she wanted, so she left. I love it when that happens... Seen a few of those lately...
  12. Okay, had I never seen the original, I might very well have been satisfied with the new one. However, I found it paling in comparison, in terms of script alone. The original Willy had a much more biting wit. And, frankly, more lines in general. Dont get me wrong, I did enjoy Depp's version in its sheer weirdness. And the additional back story on Willy was nice. Again, were it nor for the original, I would have enjoyed this one more...
  13. I resent that! I live in my parent's basement! Reality is for people who can't cope with science fiction That was Aayla. Wonder if the planet was Ryloth? From the beginning I thought it was odd that they were so enthusiastic about this "balance the force" prophecy because the Light Side Jedi were powerful and there were no known Dark Jedi. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> When even good becomes too powerful, it can become complacent and fall to corruption and weakness. With no opposing force to test it, the light side becomes too confident in its own abilities, to assured of their rightness to question it. They may not even have understood this themselves, but remember in E2 when Mace is questioning Yoda on whether or not they should tell the Senate that they are losing their power? Think of the Roman Empire, for centuries so powerful that no other nation could stand against it. Eventually falling into its own decadence and destroyed by, of all things, barbarians. A simplified version of history, but at the core that is what happened. It's also why many cultures that have "destroyer" dieties do not neccessarily consider these dieties to be evil. Kalli, for example, is highly revered, because she destroys the old to make way for the new. If I may make an anime comparison, if you've ever seen Record of Lodoss Wars, you're familiar with the Gray Witch (my avatar, BTW) In the history of Lodoss, Karla comes from a society of wizards that wished to create a perfect society and mastered all forms of magic. The wizards started off with good intentions, and for a while succeeded in bringing peace to Lodoss, but as they grew more powerful their ideas of good and evil became twisted, and eventually they fell into civil war and almost destroyed the entire people. Karla swore she would never allow any one force to ever grow so powerful as to take over the land again, and that they only way to protect the land was by making sure it stayed devided in order to keep all the various leaders from becoming too decadent and powerful. At one point she causes the death of the evil Emperor Beil to prevent him from taking over the land. At the end, when the heros destroy the evil Wizard Vagnard and there is no longer a strong evil leader to oppose them, she tells them they must kill themselves because now the side of good has grown to strong. When they refuse, she releases the evil goddess Kardis in order to bring good and evil back in to balance. It actually all makes perfect sense if you twist your brain enough! <{POST_SNAPBACK}> At the end of Episode Three, the force is in balance Two Sith Two Jedi
  14. How bout the awesome scene in the hallway of the ship where we first see Vader in episode four.....Anyone else notice that?
  15. oh, no, trekkies are dorks... is there a name for the star wars obsessed? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> That was an attempt (apparently a poor one) at humor on my part. Like, ha-ha, I'm a ditz and I think Star Wars and Start Trek are the same thing. I told my husband about it, and he didn't think it was very funny either, even after the explanation with my adorable giggle and facial expressions. He said "Say something about scruffy nerfherders, that'll get 'em going!" So ummm....You're all a bunch of scruffy nerfherders? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Who you callin scruffy?
  16. ...For example, right now I'm reading the 5th Harry Potter book. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I'm a big Potter Head. I just love those. I heard a rumor the 6th book is finished...Something Something and the Half-Blood Prince is the title, or at least some of it. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Available July 17. Order now and get it for half off the cover price.
  17. Neal Stephenson has just finished a Trilogy of historical novels set in the mid/late 1700's. Interesting stuff. Stephenson crossed over from Sci-Fi where he did some truly interesting stuff which (now that I think of it) referenced historical sources. Historic Novels (The Baroque Cycle, in 3 volumes) Quicksilver The Confusion The System of the World Sci-fi/Cyber Punk Snow Crash (which was my introduction to Summerian Myth/Legends) A Young Ladys Primer <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I really liked Snow Crash! I'm currently doing some light reading: p-adic Arakelov Number Theory, by Amnon Besser and Bloch-Kato Conjecture and Main Conjecture of Iwasawa Theory for Dirichlet Characters, by Annette Huber, Guido Kings as well as Historic similarities of Gallia Aquitania and the new European Union. Zigzag <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I love that type of reading. For example, right now I'm reading the 5th Harry Potter book.
  18. The last book I read was My Ishmael by Quinn. I'm now reading The dharma bums, by Kerouac. Someone earlier asked about Stranger in a strange land, by Heinlein. Get the uncut version rather than the original published version. Excellent read. The story of a man who is raised away from humanity and then thrown into our culture. It's mostly harmless. For my money, Heinleins best work was Time Enough For Love. Although The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress was excellent as well. I believe that is the one where Heinlein coined the term TANSTAAFL.
