  2. None of the board positions are required to be clergy. There are numerous churches completely run from the business aspect by the laity and even some smaller church that ordain their own clergy without some higher organization doing it. If plan on collecting any kind of funds or want to own/rent any property in the church's name, you need to register your church with the appropriate state and federal agencies. A lawyer and accountant are highly advised if you are pursuing this option.
  3. -Here is the actual marriage laws in DC. Read ALL of them. http://weblinks.westlaw.com/toc/default.aspx?Abbr=dc%2Dst%2Dweb&Action=ExpandTree&AP=N054B2DE095D411DB9BCF9DAC28345A2A&ItemKey=N054B2DE095D411DB9BCF9DAC28345A2A&RP=%2Ftoc%2Fdefault%2Ewl&Service=TOC&RS=WEBL12.10&VR=2.0&SPa=DCC-1000&pbc=DA010192&fragment#N054B2DE095D411DB9BCF9DAC28345A2A -The couples process is 3-4 days (depending on when they get to the courthouse to file), unlike most States, you must ID the person solemnizing the marriage at the time of application. -Your process will likely be quite a bit longer (See below). Ok.. unless you can find a ULC Minister (Modesto not the Monastery as they are two different churches) that is already registered, you will need to fill out the below form: http://www.dccourts....ster_clergy.pdf #3 will likely be the biggest sticking point for most ULC minsters and has resulted in previous denials. (See attachment DCMarriageDenial.pdf) This is the part where you have to demonstrate that you are ACTUALLY a minister and not just a "ordained online" kind of person. In narrative, they are looking for you actually functioning as a Minister by having "services" and a group that you actually minister to on a regular basis and that this ministry is fairly robust. If you write that you got ordained to solemnized this one marriage or that you are the only member of your "group" (example: a solitary practicing Witch), I would likely expect a denial as you are ordain, but not actually functioning as a minister. A phone call to (202) 879-4865 is likely in order to determine the mail or in-person requirements for applying as well as if you should send the fee in at the same time ($35 Cash or MO) or wait for a the ruling of the Judge. I would place that call in as soon as possible to get the ball rolling. -Assuming approval, you can mail the completed marriage forms in or turn them in in person. In the DC Code there is no provision for witnesses (Ref: § 46-412)

  5. Thanks Mark, I forget to add that the parent Church will not in itself cover you. You local congregation MIGHT, but see the above.
  6. In addition to the excellent advice from Devon, check your state laws as well. Most have a provision for "religious counseling" but it gets to be a sticky wicket if you want to use other techniques.
  7. Not to mention some past history within the larger ULC family of people brought in to assist with certian technology pieces hijacking it for thier own personal gain, which rightful leaves them a bit leary.
  8. No, ulchq.com is the official site of the HQ in Modesto. ULC.net is a seperate organization that is affilated with the HQ in Modesto.
  9. That really depends on who your asking and what you want to believe. The case law as well as the curative law clearly show that marriages by ULC Ministers after 1981 are questionable at best. That said there are those here that ignore that and believe that they are 100% legal. see following links for case law in NC. http://www.ulcsemina...ds/NCvLynch.pdf http://www.ulcsemina...tonvvickery.pdf http://www.ulcsemina...s/LynchvULC.pdf Bottom line: ULC marriages prior to July 3, 1981 are validated. (NC § 51-1.1.) Marriages solemnized after July 3, 1981 are questionable in legality due to the above case law. The above is an excerpt of an article written by Joanna L. Grossman who is a Law Professor at Hofstra. You can read the whole thing here: http://verdict.justia.com/2011/11/21/can-laypersons-ordained-online-as-universal-life-church-ministers-or-the-like-officiate-at-weddings
  10. It really IS that easy. let me give you an example. I help start a scholarship fund with one other guy. It was our brain child...it only took one corporate suit to buy in to get it started. We have award $30,000 in scholarships every year for the last 5 years and for the last 4 years we have awarded and additional $10,000 in science teaching tool grants. Note: each scholarship is equal to about 1 term of classes (4) at the in state tutiton rate. After the first corporate suit gave money, we were able to leverage that to get others to do the same, we are now prepping for our 6th annual scholarship banquet. The key for us to be able to get all this money is simply that we are passionate about STEM education as it IS America's future if we are to remain a top country and all the stats show the US is lagging behind in STEM compared to other western country. We then took that passion and went to corporations that use STEM graduates and used our passion to ignite thier passion. Not only is this a tax deductable donation, but it is really an investment back in to the US and specifically back in to your industry. You just have to find that one professor that is passionate about being a Vet, get him to buy in, and then he will pull his students with him and can be used to leverage other professors in to the program. I will say that passion is what gets them to do it, but not having a well defined plan on HOW your going to do it (ie, formal charity, location, a method of getting the supplies and medications, etc) laid out will prevent them from doing it.
  11. Just need to get one professor on board for doing a free clinic and it will catch on.
  12. I am assuming that you are already ordained. Assuming that is true, you file out the forms, sign it and turn it back in either in person (my preference) or by mail. I have done several weddings in Burlington County.
  13. If you need anything else. Let me know.
  14. many have upwards are 10x as many "active" lurkers (ie routinely look, but do not post as seen by the last active date) as active members.
  15. Here are some resources: Mandatory Reporters: http://www.ocfs.state.ny.us/main/publications/pub1159text.asp This also give some good info on what is abuse and what is maltreatment, what they are looking for, etc, etc. NYS has not directly addressed if Clergy are mandatory reporters and does not currently have a provision of "anyone" as a mandatory report nor has it address privileged communication in its mandatory reporting laws. (ref: http://www.childwelfare.gov/systemwide/laws_policies/statutes/clergymandated.cfm) Below are some laws on abuse reporting for NYS. Professionals Required to Report Citation: Soc. Serv. Law § 413 The following persons and officials are required to report: Physicians, physician assistants, surgeons, medical examiners, coroners, dentists, dental hygienists, osteopaths, optometrists, chiropractors, podiatrists, residents, interns, psychologists, registered nurses, social workers, or emergency medical technicians Licensed creative arts therapists, marriage and family therapists, mental health counselors, or psychoanalysts Hospital personnel or Christian Science practitioners School officials, including but not limited to, teachers, guidance counselors, school psychologists, school social workers, school nurses, or administrators Social services workers, daycare center workers, providers of family or group family daycare, or employees or volunteers in a residential care facility or any other child care or foster care worker Mental health professionals, substance abuse counselors, alcoholism counselors, or all persons credentialed by the Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services Peace officers, police officers, district attorneys or assistant district attorneys, investigators employed in the office of a district attorney, or other law enforcement officials Reporting by Other Persons Citation: Soc. Serv. Law § 414 Any other person who has reasonable cause to suspect that a child is abused or maltreated may report. Standards for Making a Report Citation: Soc. Serv. Law § 413 A report is required when the reporter has reasonable cause to suspect: A child coming before him or her in his or her professional or official capacity is an abused or maltreated child. The parent, guardian, custodian, or other person legally responsible for the child comes before the reporter and states from personal knowledge facts, conditions, or circumstances that, if correct, would render the child an abused or maltreated child. Privileged Communications Citation: Soc. Serv. Law § 415 Notwithstanding the privileges set forth in article 45 of the civil practice law and rules, and any other provision of law to the contrary, mandated reporters who make a report that initiates an investigation of an allegation of child abuse or maltreatment are required to comply with all requests for records made by a child protective service relating to the report. Inclusion of Reporter's Name in Report Citation: Soc. Serv. Law § 415 The report shall include the name and contact information for the reporter. Disclosure of Reporter Identity Citation: Soc. Serv. Law § 422-a Any disclosure of information shall not identify the source of the report. (ref: http://public.leginfo.state.ny.us/LAWSSEAF.cgi?QUERYTYPE=LAWS+&QUERYDATA=-at-SLSOS0A6T6+&LIST=LAW+&BROWSER=EXPLORER+&TOKEN=09813895+&TARGET=VIEW) NYS has two different bills proposing adding Clergy to the mandatory reporting laws, specifically NY SB 1308 and NY SB 5119. This should at least provide you with a guidepost on where, what, why and how to report suspected abuse properly.
  16. I have seen both friendly and unfriendly conversations and debates. The real difference is that debates have rules.
