RobJames
Hi. First, I must apologise: It's 5am and I'm quite ill, and I've sent myself silly trying to find the answer to a question which you probably get asked all the time, but I'm finding a lot of conflicted views, some of which are years old. So...As a ULC Minister, could I legally officiate weddings in England?Sorry if this is the millionth time this has been asked. And now to get some sleep. Key
Well, as we have many ULC ministers already there, I'm assuming marriages can be performed. Now, whether the unions are legal, I don't know. Perhaps one of our fine brothers can pipe in a response on this.Btw, hope you're feeling better by the time of reading this post.Blessings and peace to you. Rev Douglas Trouten
I think this would be a question for Pete. If he isnt here you can try over at the ULC in the UK forums here http://www.ulc.org.uk/forum/index.php Pete started that forum up primarily for our ULC brethren there in the UK, though there are non-UKers there (like me). mark 45
and to answer the question,no ulc ministers cannot officiate a marriage other than ceremonial, period.this has been a sticking point in the uk as well as the former colonies(ie:canada, australia, and such places). Seeker
Mark, please don't conflate England with the entire UK. The law in Scotland is different, and AFAIK it is possible but difficult - essentially you have to have an established church organisation and congregation, then get registered. For a one-shot option, see http://www.nrscotland.gov.uk/registration/getting-married-in-scotland/we-would-like-a-family-friend-to-solemnise-our-marriage
Deb
Hi, I am a newy! However, the way around the wedding issue is to register as celebrant . Then you can officiate marriage legally. There’s some good online diplomas to qualify with.
mark 45
check your state laws.some states don't recognize celebrants or "marriage officiants". also be careful what you sign up for.
