The ego prevents us from helping ourselves by presenting a false notion of what it really means to help ourselves.

Be blessed,

Since everything is filtered through the ego in this reality how does one get aid then?

:rolleyes: If I knew that, I wouldn't still be a seeker. I'm still at the point of contemplating my navel lint in my spiritual journey... :blink:

Yes an astute observation.

As I look in a mirror and follow the circular collection of my lint it is collected in a clockwise motion. I wonder if it collects the same direction in the southern hemishpere?

This must be proof of something!

People with outties miss out on so much :}

Ego's trick is to make us lose sight of our interdependence. That kind of ego-thought gives us a perfect justification to look out only for ourselves. But that is far from the truth. In reality we all depend on each other and we have to help each other. The husband has to help his wife, the wife has to help the husband, the mother has to help her children, and the children are supposed to help the parents too, whether they want to or not.

I don't recall ever reading anything in Taoist/Buddhist/Zen writings about the origins of ego or desire. I think the Buddha ignored the question each time it was brought up.

That is my understanding as well. It was his followers who wanted to add to what the Buddha had said who started talking about ego. In Taoism, ego is a result of dualistic thinking - 'you and me' instead of 'us'.

Having enjoyed a sweet delicious taste, and having sometimes tasted what is bitter, do not greedily enjoy the sweet taste, do not feel aversion toward the bitter.

When touched by pleasant contact, do not be enthralled, do not tremble when touched by pain. look evenly on both the pleasant and painful, not drawn or repelled by anything.
