The Craft Of The Wise
Himitsuko replied to Himitsuko's topic in Earth/Nature-Based & Indigenous Religions
First I'll answer Brother Sean's question-well kind of. Okay maybe the second _______ messed me up here, because I'm just not quite sure what the question is. Nothing is more important than my humanity. A spiritually active life is the way that I best fulfill my own humanity. Magick is the manifestation, the evidence of just how important humanity is to me. If I had a ton of money, I'd be some sort of philanthropist I'm sure. If I'd been any good at math, I'd express my humanity creating all natural cleaning products or soaps or something. What I understand is the human heart, human desires, and some of the ways the human mind "breaks" and some of the rudimentary "fixes". I also understand the undercurrent of all life as I understand it. I call that undercurrent the Divine, and I find that the more I actively seek Divine inspiration and Divine activities, the more completely I am able to express the full potential of my humanity while bringing out the finest points in others. This is my primary weapon in my crusade against apathy and fear, the Two Great Evils, (in my own universe anyway) I don't know if that even answered your question, maybe you could try wording it another way for me if I missed it. It's a brain freeze kind of a day Now as for Fawzo's questions. I have an answer based on personal opinion rather than any factual or consensual reality. Part 1: Well, I guess that would depend on which things on the lists you noticed were considered sinful. I can give you a couple of my mother's arguements, but I doubt that they represent the official reasons given by mainstream Christianity. My mother objects to meditation because she believes that if you open yourself up to "recieving messages" then Satan can use the opportunity as an opening to decieve you. This is the same reason essentially that she objects to readings. Who's to say where that information is coming from? That's her arguement anyway. Personally, I believe that it is an arguement based on the natural fear that one feels when confronted with something they haven't had an honest opportunity to learn about first hand. Churches object to people experimenting with these processes-rarely explaining why, and one's natural fears and inclinations do the rest. Which others did you have in mind? The old Testament is filled with archaic symbols, jewels, magick, divination, and literally every other tool that you will find in the early history of any indiginous peoples. Moses parting the Red Sea is perhaps one of the clearest examples. Talking to the burning bush is clearly scrying. The rods to snakes also a clear example of the early Hebrews believing in and using powerful magicks in representation of their God. This is part of what Jesus does away with by his birth, crucifixtion and resurrection. Man has always needed a "go-between" from his natural, most base self, to the highest, most Divine self. Cloaks and Staves and Tablets serve as the earliest go-betweens. According to Christianity, following the teachings of the Messiah, and asking for blessings, or working humbly, in the name of Jesus Christ, who's blood atoned all human sin, is the vehicle by which natural man realizes a personal relationship with God. This also helps explain why magick is looked down upon. It is considered by many to be a woefully misguided activity engaged in by primitive and uneducated people in it's best light. In it's worst light it is practiced by selfish people unwilling to accept the light and forgiveness of Christ, in other words, people who are choosing to turn their backs on God. Clearly I do not believe either of those arguements hold much water. This question would be funny if it wasn't genuine. Casting lots and drawing straws-ahh when all else fails. Truth is, if the Apostles had allowed the Holy Spirit to flow through them, it probably would have given a perfectly acceptable solution to their problem. At the time however the Apostles were angry and afraid. The more control we give bitterness, resentment, jealousy, anger, fear, and apathy, the harder it is for us to hear the messages that our world is constantly giving us. Without their ICON (Jesus), the apostles were confused and afraid, not to mention dealing with quite a bit of personal drama dealing with how Jesus' teachings should be best interpreted. If you read their stories you discover they did not at all agree amongst themselves what they were supposed to be learning. Rightly this is because each of them had different lessons to learn, but once Jesus was taken and Judas had committed suicide, all of this became to much to bear. Since they weren't able to hear the Divine whisper (the Holy Spirit) for themselves, and Jesus wasn't there to advise them, they "fell back" on an old tried and true method. Casting lots in this case. Now, some may consider this a period of doubt and failing on the part of this Apostles but I personally believe it shows that they were aware that this worked, and they themselves did not believe the activity to be "sinful". One more quick word on how Divination works. They say our subconscious brain knows quite a bit that it would dearly love to communicate if only we weren't so busy running around and not listening. I have no reason to doubt this to be more or less true. I believe that Divination is the method by which we learn to listen to the deepest parts of our own psyches. Recall the Rorschach Test. Now while it's not actually a good psychological tool, it does demonstrate a common phenomenon. People's abilities to "read into" and interprete the abstract; to create form from chaos. All the Diviner is doing is analying their own reality, including their past realities, to create a coherent picture by which they can see the potential ripples of their actions their hopes and their fears. There's nothing "supernatural" about it. In your case, you use it to help make certain types of decisions. And surely you've guessed by now that it's far preferable to standing for 20 minutes at a fork trying to decide which way your brain "really" wants you to go. Who cares if it actually "works" In your case no matter what the answer is the stick gives you, it becomes the starting point from which you smoothly transition into a right and correct decision for you. ...Then again I could be wrong. -

I really love talking about this stuff, and frankly I believe that if people can keep talking honestly-about the issues hehe- then we can bridge those differences between us long enough to come up with innovative and comprehensive solutions to our problems. The debate is on, so we'll chat later. -

I appreciate where you're coming from on the divination thing. I understand what your saying, and as I've said dozens of times, not every one works in all the same ways. For me, divination is like knowing where all the allied armies, and most of the enemy armies have hidden their base camps. Forwarned is forarmed so to speak. As for the glamours, it's all a local process. I mean obviously people can use the internet, post, and phone calls to project certain impressions to certain peoples or groups of people, and I suppose if I were to build a website, I would work hard to make it a truly "magickal" site so that you felt transported to another realm (like a virtual Diagon Alley) but that would be the absolute furthest possible extent of it. By and large, its a totally local ability. Truth is, if no one is looking, they can't possibly see what I want them to. Once they're looking where I want them to, I can make them see any possibility that is within their own imaginational limits. (and my too obviously) What's the point, one might ask. Its simple. The truth is, my house is a constant wreck and smells permanently of my husband's dirty socks. No one I know will tell you that, and not just because they're being polite. They will instead talk about how it's so nice and warm and inviting at my place, and they'll coo at my creative space saving solutions, and ooh and ahh about what a pleasant home I have etc. Truth be told, my apartment could burn to the ground before I get home from work today, and I could give a crap less. This is the nature of the glamour. I have spent so much time visualizing my little den just the way I want it, cleansing it, blessing it, and spending time with it, that it gives off only the impressions that I want it to. In other words, it's a dump disguised as a retreat. You can see that the nature of such work requires a real hands-on approach, so no, I wouldn't say it has much of an "area of effect" On the other hand, since my own environment affects me, my environment also secondarily affects everyone who contacts me. My mother for example can describe my bedroom although she has never been it. She hasn't actually seen one of my rooms for about 14 years, but she more or less knows what my house looks like, or at least what I want her to think it looks like-hehe. -

So I mentioned that you can be a pretty active witch without actually "casting spells" so before we get into this lets make certain everyone means the same thing, has the same definition for, "spell casting" I am including, Tarot/Oracle readings-personal and querant Cleansings Blessings Circle Castings Sabbat/Esbat rituals Initiations (formal) and probably a bunch of other stuff that makes no sense to include in this list. I am not including Acts of Kindness Meditation Massage Herbal Remedies? Counseling A warm shoulder Yet I hesitate to say of any of those things that I am not in fact using magick. In fact, it is my opinion that all the focus, discipline, and love I work so hard to develop for the casting of formalized spells is used in its very best magickal form while engaging in those more practical activities. Where the line gets really, really gray for me is where divination of any kind occurs. I don't consider myself to be overly "psychic" but I am definitely aware of my surroundings and the energies around me. In fact I am constantly working on moving those energies in precisely the right way for the best possible outcomes. It's so important to me not to miss important factors so as to not cause anyone harm that I spend much more time divining, looking, listening, and contemplating, rather than actually acting on those perceptions (as humans who spend all their time in the realm of imagination easily fool themselves into believing that they "know" things they really know nothing about--this is careless, unwise, and will cause a great deal of drama if not actual harm.) I consider this ability to discern to be the greatest of my magicks. My other magick which never requires actual casting is my ability to create illusions. While I refuse to use this power to "fool" people, I spend a lot of time "manifesting" environments, feelings, and impressions. Humans are pretty suggestible so this is hardly a difficult task, but I really go for it. In the world of magick this ability comes with an array of "spells" usually known as glamours. I have never used a formal glamour spell. I have been known to create a ritual out of creating an environment or doing my makeup and sometimes I really get into it, but as a general rule, this is a pretty subtle process. I don't spend a lot of time letting other people in on what I'm doing. As a Scorpio any chance I get to do something that is both positive and secretive, I'll take it. -

I don't at all disagree with this statement. The practice of magick is just one very small way to participate in one's universe. Not every method appeals to every person. I believe that religious diversity exists precisely so that the Divine can reach people of all cultures and personalities. I wouldn't say that magick is simply thought forms. Magick is the tool by which we take mere thought form and manifest it in a useful and productive way. And truth be told, you can be a pretty active witch without actually "casting" spells. If you want we can really delve into that idea because it's something that definitely begins to apply at the intermediate and advanced levels. We like to think of truth as completely black and white but this isn't necessarily so. Let's say my hubby has a friend that just doesn't really do right by him on a regular basis. She's going through a tough time or whatever, and she is taking out her frustrations on us. If he chooses to continue to give this person his time, attention, energy, and advice, there could be a whole bunch of competing truths. He may call his role, loyalty, and I may call it self-destructive, or enablement. Who is right. Who's truth is more true? Well, I guess that would likely depend on which of us you asked in that moment. Not to mentiion, the third party probably has a third truth that may also need to be contended with. A good witch knows that just because something is "true" doesn't mean its the only truth. Now as for dueling magicks, this is not something I have ever truly encountered and so I probably can't speak well on it. The reason that I have never encountered this is because on the rare occasion that magick was actually called for, the witches I've always known simply got together and came up with a consensual solution. I have met some "dark" or "black" practitioners, however selfish people are rarely wise and their magick, while troublesome at times is rarely strong. Everyone else has the good sense to cooperate with eachother for the greater good. -

Argonious, I really like the way you put that. We gain so much understanding just from the practice of magick. It takes discipline, concentration, and a very clear unbiased mind to percieve and evaluate the reality of the situations around us. There is purpose in hardship. It gives us the chance to learn and grow. How will we deal with the chaos in life. We cannot condemn it, and we cannot prevent it. Too much stability, much less total stagnation, prevents growth. But we can "roll with the punches." We can turn and draw when necessary, and most importantly, we can learn when and how to tell the difference. This is Wisdom, who also teaches us that all our efforts without the wellspring of Love are empty and hollow. My challenge this year is to help a friend of mine who is terribly angry and depressed (and has been for a couple of years now) to recreate his life in such a way as to be satisfying and fulfilling to him. He needs badly to learn that happiness comes from deep inside, not from the external world. The only real way to teach someone this lesson, is to set the constant and unyielding example and to be kind and compassionate even when angry or frustrated. I know the only possible way I can accomplish this is to truly face and deal with my own personal judgmentalism. If I do not, all my efforts will be condescending and hurtful. A witch HAS to heal herself first, and only then will the magick be pure enough to create the results. -

YEAH!! I finally got my bedroom Feng Shui'd!!! Now to tackle the rest of the house eh? I really feel that I'm in another stage of magickal development. I am doing really well using the instability brought by our political and economic situation as an opportunity to move forward-seriously forward in my life. The energy here is so chaotic and so many people right now are afraid-dare I say petrified of the future. Now personally I think it will all be okay, but this time of unrest is a good time to do some pretty serious work, professionally, domestically, and spiritually. Does anyone else feel that way right now? Now that we're a little older and wiser in the Craft, we can be sure of facing new and more frightening challenges. What skills do you have to deal with those challenges. What perceptions have you gained through the Craft, that you find yourself using on a daily basis. Keep the comments rolling. We're all in this together right now. Even when we don't agree. Thank you Emalpaiz for you kind words Qyros-You know I actually tried that, but I do not deal well with death at all. My heart broke every day and I finally got an ulcer. The Doc told me I was simply under too much stress and that I needed to find something that was not so emotionally taxing. Now I am trying to build a company that hopefully will change the way the whole world looks at the New Age movement. -

Hey this discussion has gotten really interesting. I've read some stuff that I agree with, and some that, of course as an individual, I don't agree with, but mostly I'm impressed that there are so many people honestly participating. A mystic desires only walking in the love of the Divine Okay, I don't want to start nitpicking definitions. That's not the point, but I really disagree with the above statement because I consider myself to be a mystic even before I consider myself a witch and I just feel that this statement is only part of the story. It's true that I desire most to walk in the love of the Divine, but the question that naturally arises is how do I do that. I've discovered through the years that living a life of generosity, forgivness, courage, loyalty and kindness, is in fact the only path I know to living in that Most Perfect Light. In other words, living in Divine love looks an awful lot like serving one's fellow man. I have discovered that happiness is primarily determined by one's own thoughts and attitudes, but I wish to give that same gift of happiness to anyone and everyone who is ready to hear it. I wish to Love anyone and everyone who can feel it. In other words, the mystics desire to walk only in Divine Love is an extremely active process. No one gets to just sit by and bliss out in a dream world. The only way I can walk in a truly Divine and unselfish love is to love my fellows. We all exert force on the Universe. Some force is creative, and some is destructive. Most of it is manipulative in some way or another. It is manipulation of a sort to encourage a friend to try something new, to get a neighbor to try marriage counseling. Witchcraft is merely one tool that we can use to manipulate our world. What good does it do you to manipulate the world all for you. With great power comes great responsibility. I cannot make choices for other people, but I can encourage them to make good choices for themselves. Some people may argue that this is not even magick at all, but mere common sense, but honestly, it takes a deep desire for wisdom, and a deep seated need to love unconditionally, and for me, also the use of personal magick, to affect that kind of change. To paraphrase, I am a witch BECAUSE I am a mystic. Witchcraft is just my tool to the ultimate goal. A world where I, and all those in my universe, can walk in Divine Love. The second thing that I noticed is the idea that trials and tribulations, cares, stresses, disease, and negative circumstance are designed, by the Divine presumably, at least some of the time so that Man can learn. Now, I don't disagree entirely, but my question is, learn what? I don't pretend to actually KNOW the answer, but I can offer my personal answer to that question. You see, I think that sometimes the lesson is humility, but probably more often the lesson is that you are in charge of your own life. Sometimes, a trial can be the universe giving you a signal that you aren't living your purpose. That if you don't pick up and take charge of your own health and wealth, you'll never rise to your own personal potential. Life may feel purposeless. What does that have to do with me. A lot of times, people only have one immediate solution to their problems. They don't think, I need to take charge of this area first, and then that one, and I feel guilty all the time because I keep blowing my responsibilities off. Heck if they had gotten that far, they wouldn't be sick and miserable in the first place. (IMHO) What they can say is, "I feel like crap and I need to get some help. Someone out there must know what to do when you feel like this." It's emotional. It's frustrating, it's exhausting, it's depressing, it's overwhelming, and I just can't go it alone and I'm not sure where to turn. Some people go to doctors. Some to psychologists. Some to more conventional ministers. Some people come to me. Because I meditate, I keep my own vision and my own mission clear. Help others help themselves using the tools, the resources, and the dreams that they already have available to them. I don't tell them to live my way, which is a nuts way to live and is only really designed to work for me. I can help them design a life that is made to work for them. I give them tools, ideas, motivation, and often a recommendation to just the right kind of "professional" to help with their problem. That is the very definition of witchcraft by my definition, even if it doesn't come with all the fancy spells and rituals ie bells and whistles. It is in fact BECAUSE I think that pain and trials are designed to be learned from that I can justify my use of witchcraft to help those who are asking and in need. -

Any time you gain something through the use of magick someone or something loses out in the process. If the divine wanted something to be a different way than that which it already is, than IMHO the divine would have created it thusly. It doesn't create junk!!! You're second sentence here is the one that is really interesting but I do want to address the first one real quickly. The universe has a virtually unlimited power to create and destroy. Your first statement seems to assume that there is a finite number of things in the universe and that the only possible way to gain something through the disciplined and careful use of magick, is to aggressively TAKE IT from someone else. But, i rarely use magick to gain anything physical. I use magick a lot to improve my outlook attitude and position in my world. Even if we assume what you said is true, and it might be, I fail to see what the issue is. You cannot make any omelets without breaking eggs so to speak. If you create a road, build a bridge, build a store, or a house, or purchase any product-and yes there is a price for the use of magick-someone or something still loses out. This is hardly an arguement for inaction. That being said, your second statement is far more fascinating. First, let me whole heartedly agree that the Universe does not in fact create junk. I mean we have poisons and venoms and plenty of things tsunamis and plenty of other things that will destroy life in general, and human life in particular, but no one would ever go so far as to say that these things are junk. All things which exist serve a purpose for which they are uniquely designed. No thinking person I know questions this. But again, magick is hardly ever simply making things appear and disappear, and its definitely not about a judgment call on the value or worth of natural things which do exist. Man on the other hand, is really big on creating lots and lots and lots of junk. So much that we have no idea what to do with them. For example, we have created biological weapons and destroyed a whole bunch of things in our irresponsible creation of junk. The divine did not directly create guns for example, but here they are and now we have to deal with their existance. Unless of course you think the Divine approves of things like hydrogen bombs, in which case my arguement is entirely moot. The divine, in my mind, wants a pleasant existence for man, but we have to be responsible with our power and with our resources and we have to be willing to do the work to be good stewards of our environment. Magick is just one very tiny way of addressing that issue. When early pagans danced for rain it wasn't because they felt the Divine was screwing it all up by causing a drought that ought to be left alone, but because they felt that they too were a natural part of the environment, as free as any bird to create the best nest for themselves and their children as possible. At the heart of real magick, is the absolute realization that Man not only lives quite naturally, in his natural environment, and that as such, we are not actually capable of breaking natural law. We can only bend it momentarily for our purposes. Unless you are given to using sticks and rocks to build your house and kill your food, surely we can agree that while the Divine creates no junk, it is not wrong for Man to create his environment the best way that he knows how. Using your logic, the Divine wouldn't have just created trees, the Divine would have created houses for us too. -

Actually MusicMan, you're exactly on topic. And I agree with you on two points. Regular meditators have far better self control and more importantly it seems as though their perceptions of the reality of a situation tends to be much clearer. You cannot change a situation the way you want it if you don't really understand what's going on, and what your motivations for change might be. You also mentioned how the inclusion of meditation lends a scientific edge to actual practice and while I am not in fact a terribly disciplined meditator-not in the traditional sense of that word anyway, I know exactly what you mean about how it seems more scientific when you are with a group of people who know what they are doing. For me, there is usually just one or two "right" ways to go about something, though always a plethora of "wrong" or misguided methods. So if I am trying to free my household from the 70 years of negative stuck energy in the walls of my apartment, I find that I do use a downright scientific methodology. First physically removing things. Cleaning them, then cleansing the space, then blessing the space, then putting everything back in according to the Feng Shui guidelines that I can follow, and then blessing and warding the room again. Its a process. And its a dedicated, focused, downright scientific process at that. I do most of that work from a place of active Zen. (okay that's just my phrase for what I mean) One thing that I am struggling with however is the rest of the people in my life. There is my husband who Bless Him hasn't been a practitioner in years and isn't emotionally ready to look at it again-though he did buy me a wonderful set of Tarot cards he saw me eyeing, and for him that's a significant step right now. My other two roommates are sweet and wonderful people but they are "muggles" to be certain, and pack rats to boot. I can't get the rest of my household to acknowledge any solution, much less my solution, much less actively and joyously participate. Not that I HAVE to have them there but it sure would be nice-and of course easier-and likely more effective. The result is that so far, only my bedroom-which I do not share with my husband as we are both very private and solitary individuals-is the only room that has been entirely addressed. My conclusion is that I am simply going to have to tackle this myself since, as was earlier pointed out explicitely, to use my considerable charm to persuade them much further would be a clear violation of free will, and would consequently result in less than steller ends I'm sure. However, has this type of situation been a problem for anyone else, and if so, how did you learn from it, how did you handle it, and if you had to do it again, would you address it differently? Thanks for chiming in! -

But you can be both a witch and a mystic. I know that because I am one. My ultimate desire is not for power for but for the greatest of Love's, the Divine spirit. In that pursuit I have earned a degree of dominion over my own reality. The use of that power is magick in my case and magick itself is not at all selfish. You say erroneously, I say that to interchange the words is only erroneous if we consider each to be mutually exclusive and in many cases they are not. The desire to do more is in fact the compulsion of love to keep loving and do so so in more and more effective ways. There is nothing wrong inherantly with power. We need power, personal and social, if we are to bring together the necessary resources to help our communities. Mystics are in no way prohibited from engaging in this activity and witches are in no way incapable of acting from love alone. But that is an elementary discussion for those not fully familiar with the terms used in such discussions and our attempt here is to move past that and into more meaningful discussion of personal experience. "People who use magic are trying to get the powers that be to bend to their own personal desires..."-Fawzo I take exception to this statement. It only applies to some people and generally only to initiates. You cannot move forward in the universe if your motivations are purely selfish. My personal desire is to make my corner of the universe better with every opportunity that presents itself. I am only a brief steward of those energies, not a master. Any advanced witch will likely say the same. -
Okay, so you've read so many Wiccan texts you have the first chapter memorized. You know all about the rules of manipulation and control. You and Karma and close buddies (most of the time.) Your spells work pretty consistantly, and you may even have a stable group that you work well with-though lets face it, more of us are solitary than would like to be. But your at that threshhold, that plateau, where you have control of yourself and have learned that by controling yourself, you really can control your environment and thus your personal reality. And now...for something completely different. The fundamentals are not only learned, they are actually applied, but that calling still tugs at you and you know there's more to do, more to see, more to experience, and much more work to be done. You actually are beginning to understand your personal role in your little corner of the universe and now that corner is feeling a little cramped. Where do you go from here? What's the next step? Someone on the forum once commented that they had always considered Wicca to be an ego stroke for self-centered people trying to garner power, or at least fool themselves in believing they had it. We the intermediate and advanced witches know that nothing could be further from the truth. Sure that may be where it starts for some of the younger ones, but we're years past that. Now that you've claimed your rightful place as an authority in your world, what will you do with this power? Where will you go? What talents and abilities have blossomed and what's still just beyond the horizon? All who are priests and priestesses of the God and Goddess are welcome to chime in with lessons recently learned and the challenges that now lie ahead. Lean on eachother to find the missing peice of your personal puzzle.

Wiccan Ulc Ministers
Himitsuko replied to Isaac_Kramer's topic in Earth/Nature-Based & Indigenous Religions
Organizing Wiccans??? Are you nuts man? Let's go over this with a fine toothed comb shall we? Wiccans are as diverse as snowflakes. Getting them to agree on the wording and meaning of the few "universal" texts that exist (like the Rede) is hard enough. Also many of them really like the idea that without a centralized body to attack-well, that makes witches and wiccans of all types very very difficult to track down and slander. How can you attack a group for believing X if only a percentage of that group actually believes it? Besides, spirituality and magick are both very personal things; that makes even a small coven a difficult project for mostly like-minded folks. Who the heck would we elect for a council anyway? RavenWolf, McCoy, Donald M. Kraig? That last guy isn't even a Wiccan but he is an expert in magick. Take a group of a hundred pagans and see if it in anyway represents the pagan community as you truly understand it. Uhmm, I would not volunteer for that project. Many other modern pagans got their start with Wicca. Shouldn't we include Druids, Native American Shamans, and heck we should probably throw in a Zen Buddhist or two. Look, this council idea has been batted about for more than ten years now. Wicca is strong in large part because there is no way to unify it. We don't need codes and credes. We believe in what we are and who we are to the best understanding that we can achieve and in the end we are powerful for that diversity. What is it with our great human need to order, classify, label, and define every concept and idea till it fits into a neatly packaged gift box. Trust me on this. Let It Go. Interfaith Organizations working to better the world however are all the rage these days. -
