Actually, another speculation other than "missionaries", could be scouts. Afterall, to come this far, there may not be anything left for them on their homeworld, or it may no longer exist. So, another planet to colonize. They just see us as ants in the park. And killing us from space, may just ruin the atmosphere for them.

If they can come here, they can go anywhere.

Even our pest control specialists, have poisons that break down over time.

Yes, I know... from a rational point of view they would be so different et cetera... but:

For the sake of argument, let us suppose that the spaceship has landed.  ET is trying to find an intelligent Human.  Someone with a religion or philosophy, that wouldn't be a waste of time.

You are acquainted with some Buddhist or Taoist thought.  Do you have anything to say, that would hold ET's attention?  If it's true that nothing about these teachings is culturally or species specific -- there could be a good conversation here.

I didn't have anything mapped out.  I thought there could be a discussion of culturally neutral ideas.  Beyond that, I don't know.

I assumed as much... I was more talking to damnthing...

Logic would dictate it would be something of a "cultural" talk. As you have said also: if they were here to take our resources they wouldn't need to be talking...

So I'd assume an answer likt: Hi there, I'm here to get to know more about you...

But if we take all the previous assumptions... this would be a logical next step... wouldn't it?

In pseudo code the algorithm would look something like this:

IF they could even come here,

AND even remotely relate to us,

AND are not interested in simply taking our resources,

THEN they would actually be here to get to know us...

ELSE we simply can not know

OR we are f#@&ed...

Something like that...?

There are other options.  Perhaps silly, but we are speculating.

  • Empire Building.  Perhaps in the manner of Great Britain or Rome.  Empire for it's own sake.  Just because they have high tech, does not imply social maturity.  I should clarify.  That does not mean that they want us as citizens.  When Great Britain took over India, that included the elephants.  The elephants were never citizens.
  • Missionaries.  Come to save our souls.  They can have high tech and still be crazy.
  • Academics.  Doctoral students are always looking for strange things, to do a research study.
  • Musicologists, Linguists, Social Scientists, etc.  You never know what will excite a professional.
  • Tourism.  The more primitive and disgusting, the better.
  • Chefs.  "TO  SERVE  MAN"
  • Conservationists.  They might want to save the whales -- from us.

True... so? What would you say to them (that was the exercise here, wasn't it...)?

Hmkay... that's a nice and polite conversation starter too... now, let's assume (again, I know) we get over the "polite pleasantries" and get "to the point". Then:

We're basically fooked if they're here: for empire building, as missionaries, chefs and/or conservationists (Star Trek IV?)...

Where would we want the conversation to go if they were academics (I'll put musicologists in with all the other genuine "-logists" into academia) or tourists...? (From a Buddhist or Taoist thought?)

Missionary can mean very different things.  They could have a mental discipline or philosophy that is actually useful.  Think of the Buddhist monks teaching meditation.

They could also be here to help.  As in -- "Children should not be playing with matches.  I'm here to collect your nuclear weapons, before you hurt yourselves."

Of course -- "I'm here for some great music.  Do you play?"

:D

Oh cool! That would be a great one - IMHO - to explore!!! What would you let them hear? And would you play it yourself or from a source?

I don't know what I would do with that.  I'm not equipped.
