If I believe in equal justice for all, and equal treatment under law,

does that make me a Liberal or a Conservative?

If I believe that everyone should be able to do anything they wish, as long as they do not interfere with the rights of others,

does that make me a Liberal or a Conservative?

If I believe that the government must conduct its financial affairs responsibly and sustainably,

does that make me a Conservative?

If I believe that we as a society do have some moral obligation to help people who are not abole to help themselves,

does that make me a Liberal?

If I believe that there is a limit to how much we can help our less fortunate,

does that make me a Conservative?

If I believe that the government should do whatever it can to improve the circumstances of as many its people as it can, whenever it can,

does that make me a Liberal?

If I listen to all sides of an debate and try to form opinions based on logic and reasoning,

does that make me a freak?

If I hold certain opinions for a lifetime but am willing to change them when I find a better philosophy,

does that make me a turncoat?

If I can see both advantages and disadvantages to everything we do,

does that make me indecisive?

I believe in all of these things.

And you have socialism and anarchism up there twice.

My pick is other, not the current system but the one that was intended.

Actually this organization is another vision of what was intended.

I would say I am more of a socialist than anything else, but with a little "s." I believe in many of the tenets of socialism as a philosophy, but I do nor endorse any organised Socialist groups or political parties. I am registered as a Democrat (Dixie-crat), but I don't strictly hold to the party line.

I'm with Carl...

And there's nothing there that really fits me, either.

But I'm definitely neither a Socialist or an Anarchist. Basic human nature prohibits either of those extremes.

Peace.

Excuse me?

Socialism, National Socialism - Only socialists do not see they belong together. Hitler was a socialist but a nationalist. Deny all you want. He was a card carrying member and only left to form a socialist party for germany and germans alone. Mussolini was expelled from the socialist party after he supported Italian involvement in WWI also for nationalist reasons.

Libertarianism, Anarchism - To many libertarians see no need for government, which makes them anarchists.

I am for the government described literally in our founding documents. I find little need to expand them regarding the relationship between the government and the people. Maybe to more exactly define personhood. Liberty is not material, it is not effortless, and it requires nothing of anyone else except respect. Government is necessary, but sovereignty resides in the individual. Governments are layers around ever larger groups of individuals, each layer having less power and doing less, without redundancy, than the layers it contains. The larger the population covered by the government, the less powerful it should be over the people. The tasks delegated to each layer are only what lower layers cannot possibly do at all. Interstate commerce cannot be regulated at the municipal level. Garbage collection does not need to be organized at the national level. I would also change a some congressional rules to force some issues to be agreed upon unanimously, like raising the debt limit. Mainly those areas where a majority could burden a minority.

We are all alive, we are all free, happiness is our own responsibility. We are not guaranteed to be kept alive, or to be given anything that we do not already have.

I am not going to dignify this with a reply.

Furthermore this topic was not intended to argue but simply to understand each others political inclinations.

then why did you put such limited options and miss the most common (liberal, conservative, moderate)?

All those I consider part of the current political system.

Do you think that liberals, conservatives and moderates are not part of the current political system?

A question on the topic. Can we really definitively categorize political ideologies?

For sake of argument, if all Americans were to be taxed on a flat rate, then conservative Donald Trump would obviously

pay more than the liberal computer tech would at 60 grand a year. Each would be contributing according to their means.

Each a responsible and viable working contributer.

But out of that pool of tax each would receive equal protection from our national defense system, each receiving according

to their need to be protected as a citizen. Clearly the fundamental principle behind socialism. The same argument could be

made for trash collection. We don't argue much about it, but we all give a share to have it done for the entire community.

It all gets a little fuzzy when you start nit-picking the particulars. When it suites us as a community, we tolerate socialism in

America. When we don't benefit directly, we call it an enemy of freedom.

The current political system is broken but that does not mean that the other options listed could fix it. I am liberal in some aspects. conservative in some, libertarian in some, anarchist in some, and maybe even socialist in some. I also think that libertarian and conservative are the same, just different extremes and liberal and socialism the same but different extremes. It depends solely upon the issue at hand as to what direction I lean politically. I am a member of no political party as the political parties do not bend once their platform is in place. In order to survive as a nation we must all be willing to bend. It cannot be all or nothing. That is why our current congress is stubbornly locked into ineffectiveness.

What is your political leaning?

I'll have to look up what half of these mean.....that is NOT a comment about anyone but me. Wow! I am getting old and out of it.

Thankful though to be able to say old......so many didn't get to old along the way.....I digress...

If I believe in equal justice for all, and equal treatment under law,

does that make me a Liberal or a Conservative?

I don't know.....I am not that politically astute. I am curious about the use of the word justice. There seems to be some fuzzy thinking on that one. Justice to one person seems to equal revenge to another. Is justice, for example a form of restitution or a punishment? Both? Neither? Something else all together?

If I believe that everyone should be able to do anything they wish, as long as they do not interfere with the rights of others,

does that make me a Liberal or a Conservative?

Who gets to decide when two sides differ on what is their right? Who decides what is interference? If I want to allow my child to die - and I view that as my right - who draws the line in the sand and how does the rule get enforced. Determining the process might help you determine if you are a liberal or a conservative, perhaps.

If I believe that the government must conduct its financial affairs responsibly and sustainably,

does that make me a Conservative?

What is "responsibly" means different things to different people? Certainly MY idea of a household budget is quite different than my neighbors. I do not believe in buying things (other than a house or car) on credit. My neighbor buys a cup of coffee with a credit card. But he seems to be able to manage the payments. He is a lawful citizen as best I can tell. Who determines the universal use of such yardsticks? Strong arm of the law? Legislation? I dunno - but how you feel about that will help determine your leanings. BOTH conservatives and liberals might believe the same thing you do - as do some moderates - but HOW these things are enacted is quite different, no?

If I believe that we as a society do have some moral obligation to help people who are not abole to help themselves,

does that make me a Liberal?

It might. It might also make you a conservative, a socialist, a church or a charity. A really nice person (I am reasonably sure that is true.) They are noble and worthwhile beliefs - but are not precise definitions when used as a generality. Your beliefs are shared by many. Some on opposing sides.

If I listen to all sides of an debate and try to form opinions based on logic and reasoning,

does that make me a freak?

Heck no! It makes you someone I respect and admire. THANK you...seriously - wish we could make that happen a whole lot more often.

If I can see both advantages and disadvantages to everything we do,

does that make me indecisive?

Not at all! It makes you a wise person who thinks things through. And is flexible enough to allow new ideas.....considering each carefully.

Not having determined an answer yet - is not at all the same thing as avoiding the process.

I believe in all of these things.

Thank you for sharing them.

post script if I messed up the multiple quotes and colors - hopefully a kind hearted moderator will help me - I can't figure out how to preview this thing and I am prone to screwing up such postings so thanks in advance.
