  1. You can buy a translation of the Koran in most languages and in practically any country. And I'm sure the Saudis would send you a free one if you asked. There are various charitable organisations that distribute free translations, too.

But they are not what Muslims consider the be 'The Koran' itself.

Just think how certain debates in Christianity would be simplified (perhaps) if translating the Bible was frowned upon and every Christian was set to learn Hebrew, Aramaic, Greek and Latin!

Here (the United Arab Emirates) translations of the Koran into the numerous languages spoken by the expats are subsidised by the Ministry for Religious Affairs, and are cheap. There are numerous charities that will give you a free copy if you like.

I guess that also means that the translations are very carefully looked at by religious and lingusitic experts, so that they are at the least not terribly misleading renditions (but, not being the actual words of God, they are always going to be nothing like the real thing in Islamic teaching).

Of course any secular publisher can publish their own translations, and they do.

I used to have my father's old Everyman edition (published in the 1930s), which was in (not very good) English verse, as well as a Penguin Classics edition from the 1950s (which became controversial as apparently some of the renderings were quite misleading - plus the fact that the translator was Jewish annoyed some of the men with beards and beads).

As you can imagine, Muslims having only just by a whisker agreed that it is permissible to translate the Koran at all, the debate around who should translate it, and how certain passages should be translated can be pretty fierce.

What there isn't, is any debate within Islam about what the Koran actually says, because it says what it says, and it says it in Arabic.

What it means is another matter, and has occupied scholars for the whole of Muslim history to date.

Arabic is a hugely poetic, allusive, complex language, where all the words have multiple shades of meaning. (In Jonathan Raban's book Arabia, he describes looking up the root word for "child". It includes meanings that can be rendered "intruder", "nuisance" and many other deeply sceptical terms. The root word for "mother" includes "illiteracy" "ignorance"...

Actually knowing what meaning is indicated is difficult enough even for modern Arabic speakers looking at an ordinary piece of modern Arabic... which for an English teacher means I am constantly asking my students of writing what they mean to say.)

But there is no doubt about what the actual words of the Koran are - anyone can see them, whether or not they can read and interpret them.

This is why the 'Satanic Verses' was such a hot topic... more on that in a later post, if anyone's interested.

well, I am interested, but, perhaps I should read up on satanic verses first. Been a while since it was a topic over here, and even then, no one talked much about the book, instead focusing on the author and his predicament.

  2. I've seen so many stories about how people are using their ordination. Some people have actual brick and mortar churches, some people have se tup web ministries, some people did it just to perform a wedding for a friend, and some people did it just because they like the idea of being a minister!

    So, what's your story??

As for me, I freely admit that I did it, initially, as a joke. I had NO idea what the ULC was all about. I was ordained before I made my first post on the old Snitz forum.

There, I found a community of people that interested me, so I jumped in with the odd news story (funny stuff that I'd found on the internet.) Kevin noticed, and gave me my very own little section. "News flashes from Murph."

And from there, I took on a few more areas, and eventually, took over the whole thing!

    Usurper

For myself, I mainly do letters. Wisconsin requires a letter of sponsorship from an in state minister for an out of state minister when an out of state minister wants to do a wedding in state. We are just moving into the busy season. I have done about 15 letters so far this summer, and expect to do over 100 by fall. As of now, this is all out of my pocket, but I am considering getting set up to take some donations to off set the cost of stamps, envelopes, etc.

  3. So, about to file my articles of incorporation as a nonprofit with the state of Michigan, with plans to apply for tax-exempt & charitable status.

That's all well and good, god knows there's plenty of help to be had there online...but I have a question that I've been able to find next to nothing on...

I know I can open a bank account, etc, in the name of my newly created church.

Thing is, Discordiansism is one of the many religions big on religious names (what, you thought John Paul was the son of Mr & Mrs "the Sixth?).

Is there any way to register my holy name as some sort of legal alias?

Or is there some solution to this dilemma that I'm overlooking?

  4. Basically as I understand it, Pennsylvania requires an ordained minister to have a "regular congregation" prior to being allowed to perform marriages. The issue with the ACLU is that if someone is an ordained minister, he/she may not have a "regular congregation" but that this requirement discriminates against ministers who provide ministerial assistance to the military services, teaching ministers, etc. who may not be allowed to marry people then. At least this is how I understnad it based on the information I read. As the ULC does not require an ordained minister to have a "regular congrgation", this means that an ordained ULC minister may not be allowed to perform marriage in Pennsylvania.

Actually, their law requires the minister to be associated with a "regularly established church". Not to have a congregation. That is why Bucks found for the couple. ULC is a "regularly established church". I think this one is all over but the crying.. But, law is never completely predictable.

also from one of the articles

"In the last three months, the ACLU has won similar victories in a Montgomery County case involving another ULC minister and in a Philadelphia case involving a Jesuit priest."

The jesuit priest case will cinch this state wide, I suspect. Jesuits rarely have congregations, but no one is going to tell them they can't perform marriages.

  6. THE DAY I ALMOST DIED

Hello to all brothers and sisters.

I almost died last year and even way before i spent about 16 days in a coma and came so close to dying ihad always felt the need to serve god, and after I got sick last year I came out of the hospital very much with my mind made up that I was going to be a reverend and I have followed trough with that and I have became a ordainded minister.

I feel the need to help people not doing anything very dramatic all I want to be able to do in this small town I live in is to be able to give a few maybe 20 at most people with a clean warm place to sleep and two hot meals a day,

I would also like to be able to give them clothing, not sell the things to them or make them work for them I just want to be able to give the things the people need to them, the bear minimum give them heat in the winter & cool in the summer, clothing and to be able to help them along the lines of getting some type of job.

In the mean time while they are not doing much of anything, I would like to make programs to make an delivery food to people who are not able to help there self, visit people in nursing homes who have no one, get togeather and have prayer groups for those who are able to pray or just pray for them,

Also I would like to be able to help anyone with any kind of needs that they might have , I dont intend to charge for any services or even asking them to do any work out of the question except clean up after there selves, I want to be able to let them stay inside untill the temp comes up to a warm enough level so they dont get sick,

All and all I just want to help in my comunnity in any way I can, and help any one I can, I also intend to have prayer meeting and bible study at least 3 times a week lasting no less than an hour and no more than 3 hours,

I would like to be helped and taught by ministers with more knowledge to help me in the art of building members and adding them to the church I really want nothing for myself out of this I just want to be able to help all I can with well thought out programs and well checked out people who have a real desire to help others,

I have never asked for anything before in my life but I am asking now for directions to a way to get a goverment grant to help establish these programs and I am sure god will make a way for me to do things ,

I have total faith in god that he will direct me in the way I need to go to have my needs meet, also if there is anyone out there that are willing to help people in a small town with a few homeless people maybe 20 people I am not sure but I want to see to there needs all togeather if possible, I am also capible of teaching them to do some types of work and I will do my best to help them learn and become employed,

If I only had some help from some people and govt programs I would be able to acheive these things and as I said I know god will make a way, So if anyone will find it in there hearts to help me with these things I have set up a board of people to watch me and make sure I dont abuse anything for myself,

And that it all goes to the needy, please help me with blankets, can foods, sleeping bags, shoes, coats and clothing, that is all I ask please help, I will do all the hard work and at some time I want to be able to feed the older people when I am able if you are interested please contact me at rev.lewis bowman, 10921, hwy 36, suite 19. I am gonna say welcome, but I admit I didn't read much past the first two lines. Scanned the rest.. I don't recommned center justification in posts.

And I would say this post comes dangerously close to a monetary solicitation, which is, if I recall, forbotten on the board. Though, I simply couldn't make real heads or tails of it due to formatting... Careful what you ask for...

  7. For years I have wondered why when the wizard/magician, whoever, says 'Open Says Me', the door opens.

This seems a great tool for Spiritual Growth, if used to remain in the NOW. No matter what you are doing at 'the moment', your intention does not change. Maybe 'agenda' is another word for this...Long term goal?

Probably 'agenda' & 'long term goal' are not enough to describe this powerful tool available to us.

Maybe intention is not the word. Volition must be the word for this?

I have much respect for the ancient ways, and 'religions'. Maybe some of the 'work' they do is in developing Volition?

    Comments Appreciated!

    PEACE

not sure I believe in volition. Can you make a case for its existence?

  8. I'll say no since IMO color is a perception and truth is an experience. Truth is love what color is love?

    Chai latte brown.

That is also the flavor of Love.

Chai is love in liquid form.

    That is a good point.

Let's have an exercise. In your example, saying you are a good person is a subjective opinion. If we were to first agree upon a scale, however, to measure and determine if you really are a good person, regardless of opinion, then we'd come to an objective truth..... and, no doubt, a truth that finds that you are, in fact, a good person!

no, it would be subjective. Subject to the agreed upon scale. We could agree, but it still would not be objective truth. The best we can hope to achieve is an approximation of truth. There is no way to collect enough data to get an exact truth.

    Well said and I agree.

oh, yes, I agree with that as well.

  9. "if he is aware of them, the time line is changed, the future is changed, and they vanish, like a dwarf, in a puff of greasy black smoke."

Well, no. He may be aware of these protectors from the future, but as stated, he thinks that he sent them into the past in his future. He can believe this all he wants, but the fact is that the natianal socialist uprising under the guies of the third reich failed, and it was the victor's ancestors who sent these body gaurds to protect him. Though he is the enemy, his existance must be protected until the designated temporal date of 5/5/1945 for the soviet troops to pull his body from the charred remains of a bunker and declare him officialy dead (This body identification of adolf and eva can be contested by many curious anamalitiys but thats not the point) .

And it could be in his arrogant assurance of future victory from these protectors that slack is given onto formally tightly held military reigns, acctualy leading to defeat. Like powdered suger in boiling water, the time travellers just become part of the mixture, as thier presense was infact already accounted for.

And on the subject, the history books are actualy filled with anamolis happenings that seem to steer things toward the way things are, so to speak. The unknown stranger who encouraged those present at the signing of the declaration of independance to actualy sign thier name when they began to balk, the strange tall man that commanded hitler to do as he did, who was "terrible to behold" (in his own words) ; as well as the anacronistic items floating around (bagdad battery, tutankumin's mecanical rooster, etc.), though these could of course be written off as simply deriving from an advanced civilization predating humanity by an aeon or so. But all in all, time travel may be quite feasable, and our past may have already been altered.

And along the lines of multi possible doings by people, as in eating an apple or an orange, and what happens in each universe after the fact...was tha apple poisen, did the orange give an extra boost of vitamins that triggered a thought that sprouts into an idead that eventualy changes the world, and so on...Perhaps when people go completly crazy as in killing sprees and such, that this is infact another facet of the person that was never in this reality before. And in the reality deviating from solid here and now existance, maybe it all just fades away. The eating of the poisen apple corrisponds with an earth quake or gas leak or meteor collision. And that reality no longer exists. But then again that is foolish, becuse the rubble itself from a shatered world would still exist as would the stars and such things...they would not stop existing just because humanity is not around to see it. So I'm probably wrong on that one

you are making a big leap here. You are, if I follow, assuming these people were already present and protecting him. Am I misunderstanding?

As far as I can see, if anyone travels in time, they will change the timeline, simply by existing in another timeline. It may be possible to observe a previous timeline, but even the act of observation can change the outcome. Of course, it is possible that these changed timelines already exist on alternate time paths. Perhaps possible is the wrong word. Inevitable..

  10. that last post brings something pondered a while back one afternoon. When the phisical human body can be transported back into "time" with readily available technology, nexis individuals will have to be protected in order to protect the time line. So hitler would basicly be surrounded by time travelers from his future to ensure that he lives until the set point of his "death". If he was aware of this, he would assume that the tech was developed by his own research teams, and that he himself ordered the body gaurds into his past to protect him. That would be acceptable reasoning to him, especialy if the agents assigned him insisted that he himself had ordered them to not reveal any of his future events, in order to not taint the rise of the national socialist party.

And of course this may have happened and perhaps a medeling of time is already there for those that care to look for the clues.

if he is aware of them, the time line is changed, the future is changed, and they vanish, like a dwarf, in a puff of greasy black smoke.
I remember hearing of a guy who stated that he went back in time and killed his father to test the hypothesis out whether one could affect their own reality by such actions. When he came back to the present nothing earth shattering had changed so the assumption is that traveling back in time doesn't alter reality it just creates another split as in the multiple realities theme. Each decision we make some portion of ourselves branches off in the other possibility.

I wonder what the portion of me who decided not to post this craziness is doing right now.

    or maybe his Mom cheated...

  11. Rarely, but then I just paid $7 to watch the Reno 911 DVD becuase it was half price and then after I got it home I realized the reason I didn't see it at the movies was because I didn't want to waste $7 to see it. Me dumb sometimes..I guess thats not a secret around here anymore lol

    (point) <snicker>

  12. The game is Empire of the Petal Throne, actually the second RPG published by TSR, created by Linguistics Professor M.A.R. Barker of the University of Minnesota. Not surprised you never heard of the book, as it was independently published, though he did have two other books set in the world published (I think under DAW) It was arguably the first published Game Setting, and, interestingly, not inspired by western mythology or Tolkien.

It is an ok book, however, with a few really nice touches and a rather Deus ex Machina ending.

Next up. I am America and So Can You..
