  1. Qryos, I was fortunate to live in Japan when I was a child and learned the art from a beautiful soul that watched me while my parents were at work. She would take my haiku, and after many "Oooos" and "Ahhhs", would show me how to write them in kanji. I've long since forgotten how to write in the original language of the haiku, but continued to write at least one everyday. Like anything else in life, excersize and practice improves one's ability to perform.

  2. I have wanted to do this since I was a teenager (40 years ago). I've always been a spiritual person (though not always devout), enjoying a close relationship with my Creator, and deeply interested in improving my understanding of Man's place in His Universe . Once, I even clipped a ULC advertisment out of a check-out line newspaper with the intention of seeking my ordination, but never sent it in. Then, a couple years ago (as the presiding officer of a fraternal organization I belong to) I was asked to officiate at a funeral for one of our members. I was honored to do so . . . A few months later I was asked to perform the ceremony for another, and then another . . . One day last year, someone asked if I did weddings too . . . and even though I knew they were kidding me, I figured . . . "Why not?" It still took me another 6 to 8 months to get around to submitting my application . . .But here I am . . . Now, besides weddings and funerals, I'd like to get some training that would qualify me to counsel couples and troubled teens.

  3. My reply may seem un-timely, being so far removed from the day of your loss, but I felt compelled to offer my sincerest condolenses to you and your family. I know from experience that time does not heal all wounds, and in fact may be even harder to bear with each day. In your grief, you may question your faith in a Power that allows such tragic things to happen . . . as I did . . . I have no answers, but can only offer this advice . . . Be thankful for the times you shared together, be especially kind to those that share your loss, and be assured that your re-union with your brother will be a joyous occasion. May God bless you all, Amen.

  4. I just got through reading Wanagi's discourse about the Medicine Wheel, and noted your comments about the simularities to wheels in other cultures. I know that the names and nature of our Higher Powers may be entirely different, but I believe that every act in life has purpose, and I would not have discovered Wanagi's wonderful forum topic if you had not mentioned the Wheel. My thanks, my friend!

  5. THE COG

    THERE ONCE WAS A DAY

    WHEN AN EVERYDAY COG

    GOT TIRED OF TURNING

    IN PERPETUAL SLOG.

    HIS WHIRLING AND TWIRLING

KEPT HIS MIND IN A SPIN

    THUS PUZZLED HE PONDERED

WHERE TO START, WHERE TO END?

    HE ASK OF HIS NEIGHBOR

    (IN HIS ROUND-ABOUT-MIEN)

    "IS THIS CEASELESS CYCLING

    WHY WHEELS WERE MACHINED?"

WAS ANSWERED, "I'VE GOT TO ROLL,

I'VE NO TIME, SO TO SPEAK!

    BETTER ORDER SOME OIL!

    YOU'RE STARTING TO SQUEAK!"

    AROUND AND ABOUT THEN

    (OUR POOR COG DESPAIRING)

    HE RIDDLED HIS REASON,

    AND QUESTIONED HIS BEARINGS.

    BUT THEY COULDN'T TELL HIM,

    BEING PRESSED TO EXERTION.

    (OUR COG WASN'T SURE

    THAT IT WASN'T COERCION!)

    HE CALLED FOR A MEETING,

    A GATHERING OF GEARS,

    WHERE HE THUNDERED AND ROARED

    (HAVING WOUND ROUND FOR YEARS).

    WHEN, OVER AND UNDER,

    EVERY SPROCKET AND CAM

    WENT SUDDENLY SILENT

    AS IF THEY'D BEEN JAMMED!

    THEN A BIG HAIRY HAND

GAVE A TWIST OF A WRENCH,

    NOW OUR HERO, THE COG,

IS RESTING UP ON A BENCH.
